As the end of the year gets close we like to give a helping hand to thrifty gift givers so once again the the 'Santa Claus in a Box Kit' is back. The kit includes enough cream, seakelp, and other actives to make a fancy cream for all your friends and relatives. See below for more information.

Dr. Sivak has completed the first batch of MSR (our new active for gray hair). She is currently working on the formulation of the conditioner which we will use as a medium. Our hope is that the conditioner and the active complex on its own will be available for sale at the beginning of December. To make up for the delay she has added ATP and Phloretin to our lineup, she has written about both below.
We are continuing our efforts to upgrade our website, the number of shopping cart errors is now very small. If you do get an error when checking out please try again a couple of minutes later, if that does not work please send me an email (jonatan@skinactives.com) there are many ways to get around the problems and we will make sure that neither your order or your payment are duplicated.

Dr. Sivak has a new Blog (http://www.skinactives.com/blog/). Her last post about a scientifically challenged skin care company is particularly interesting.

We are still experimenting with Facebook and Twitter and have had a couple of item sales that we have announced through those site (and our forum). Check us out on these sites and let us know what you think.

Eyelashes and the price of speaking "Science"

At the lab, we learn that scientific language does not include the words "extraordinary", "marvelous", etc.

But even I have to say that our eyelash serum with KGF is a great product. It is common sense to use growth factors and nutrients to compensate for their decline with age, but it takes a lot of know-how and determination to make the KGF and sell the serum. That is what we have done at SAS.

Why are we not selling more of this serum? The first reason is that people see that our serum costs a fraction of what Latisse costs (without counting the visit to the doctor to prescribe it) and assume that Latisse is better. In fact, the ingredients in our serum cost a lot more in the open market than the ingredients in Latisse, but because we make the KGF ourselves and don't spend money in advertising we can afford to sell at a very low price.

The second reason is that we humans tend not to read instructions (I don't read instructions unless I have no choice). Clients receive our serum and assume that an eyelash serum should be applied to the eyelashes. But the hair is formed in the eyelash line, on the eyelid, in the skin cells. Apply it to the eyelashes and you will be wasting serum.

Although nothing will work in all people, our serum seems to work for a majority. Why not for everybody? Because there may be other reasons why you are losing eyelashes. For example, mascara and fake eyelashes glue can be a problem. Also, there may be something else going on besides a decline in growth factors and nutrition in the eyelid so if you don't get results with our KGF serum within two months, it may be a good idea to see a doctor.

Dream CreamNew Kit: Santa Claus in a Box
http://www.skinactives.com/product/detail.aspx?prodID=187

This kit contains everything you need to make over half a gallon of great cream to give to your friends and family this Christmas. Easy to mix, in five minutes you can have over 60 one ounce scoops of great cream (the total price of the cream comes out at a little less than $3 per fluid ounce).

If you wish to give your loved ones a holiday gift, try our "Santa Claus in a box kit" (a.k.a. "Hanukkah in a box" kit). It will show your love without adding calories to the already calorie-heavy holidays. You can adapt the mix to the needs of your friend, with more shea mousse for dry or aged skin and no shea mousse (and more sea kelp bioferment) for younger skin. Purchase fancy jars and print your own labels to make a great cream that your friends and family will love at an incredible price. It is also great for parties.

This year we added (without changing the price!!!) shea mousse, because winter is so hard on the skin. The seasonal fragrances are exceptionally good (chosen by me, Hannah).

Visit YouTube for a mixing demonstration.

Another great gift for the holidays is our our lip balm. You can give three of them in a nice little bag but even one of them will be great for those chapped lips in the Northeast (and Midwest, and everywhere, really).

New actives
Phloretin
http://www.skinactives.com/product/detail.aspx?prodID=188
We are now selling the active in SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF without the silly stuff in their formulation (denatured alcohol? why?). Pholretin is a nice antioxidant and inhibits elastase activity.  Incidentally, phloretin has been shown to inhibit proliferation of breast cancer cells, a good reason to eat that "apple a day". I think phloretin may become a favorite of DIY that like to make their own vitamin C-serums.

Adenosine triphosphate
http://www.skinactives.com/product/detail.aspx?prodID=189
There is no such thing as "most important molecule in life" (because life requires an enormous complexity), but if pressed I would choose ATP for the title. This is life's energy currency, the universal energy storage unit, used in practically every synthetic reaction that happens not just in our bodies but in all animals, plants and bacteria (and even in viruses when they are directing traffic in the host). I am including ATP in our line of actives NOT because it will solve all your problems, it will not. First of all, ATP is being formed and broken continuously, so any energy stored in the gram of ATP we can sell you will be used up almost instantly. But the ADP and phosphate formed as a result will be used and reused by your body, so there is no waste here.
Go to our newsletter from November 2008 for more information on ATP and how the mitochondria makes it.

Unsung heroes of SAS

Lycopene - http://www.skinactives.com/product/detail.aspx?prodID=67:
This fantastic antioxidant has a good excuse to not being popular with our clients: it is already present in our antiox booster. But if you want to give your cream, lip treatment, or mineral make up a red color this is the perfect active.

Jiaogulan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum) - http://www.skinactives.com/product/detail.aspx?prodID=48:  As a tea, jiaogulan"benefits Qi, enriches the blood, keeps the heart in good shape, and relieves uneasiness of body and mind". For those who want scientific information rather than Qi: Jiaogulan extract can absorb UV (increasing the SPF of any sunblock), and gypenosides can protect vascular endothelial cells from oxidant injury.

Galangal Extract - http://www.skinactives.com/product/detail.aspx?prodID=178:
Kaempferia galanga  is a traditional aromatic plant used in tropics and subtropics of Asia for its medicinal properties and as a spice. It contains chemicals with antibacterial activity, including anti-acne. It also has analgesic, anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory properties, and it smells nice! Galangal is also used as an SPF booster because it contains ethyl methoxycinnamate, a UV absorber.

Mangosteen Extract - http://www.skinactives.com/product/detail.aspx?prodID=69:
The chemical mangostin and other xanthone derivatives are the chemicals in mangosteen that may be responsible for its anti-inflammatory activity. The mechanism of action is through inhibition of histamine release, and inhibition of cyclooxygenase and prostaglandin E2 synthesis. Gamma-mangostin and rubraxanthone have shown to push some cancer cell types to apoptosis (cell death).

Andrographis paniculata - http://www.skinactives.com/product/detail.aspx?prodID=5:
Skin inflammation is a persistent problem for so many people (me included) and OTC creams containing cortisone can only be used short term (cortisone will thin the skin and should not be used except for emergencies). So it is really nice when scientific research comes up with an active with anti-inflammatory properties and no side effects. You will find Andrographis in our anti-inflammatory cream, or you can mix your own in any cream and lotion you like (make sure it dissolves well first). The mechanism of activity of andrographolide is thorugh the inhibition of nuclear factor-kappaB, a central transcriptional factor and a regulator of many genes involved in immunological responses.

Hannah's Notes

Hannah
Coming in December

Following the discovery that gray hair is produced by hair follicles lacking in two crucial antioxidant enzymes, we will be offering these two enzymes in a hair serum that should help protect your scalp and prevent the loss of hair color.
To respond to clients' questions: we will not be making any effort to patent this extraordinary serum, because the Patent Office will reject applications that are derived by using common sense on published scientific discoveries, and our serum is a clear example of common sense. However, you should not expect this type of product to be forthcoming from other skin care or hair care companies because, besides common sense, the two key actives in this serum are a major achievement not easy (or cheap) to replicate outside of SAS.
Gray hair happens because there is little or no melanin incorporated in the hair as it is being
formed in the follicle. It has been known for some time that oxidants were implicated in
the damage and death of the melanocytes in the follicle, and new evidence shows that hydrogen
peroxide (H2O2) accumulates in the hair shafts of gray-white hair. Two enzymes are involved in the prevention and repair of oxidative damage: catalase and methionine sulfoxide reductase. In gray hairs they are almost completely gone.

Catalase breaks down hydrogen peroxide, preventing damage to the cell's DNA and membrane lipids. Conversely, methionine sulfoxide reductase (MSR) repairs protein damage. For example, MSR can fix a damaged amino acid in tyrosinase the key enzyme of melanogenesis. Another way of preventing damage of tyrosinase by hydrogen peroxide is to have L-methionine in the environment.

Our SAS no-gray serum will contain, among other actives, catalase, methionine sulfoxide reductase, phloretin and L-methionine.  The objective of our no-gray serum is to prevent the loss of hair color.

There is no evidence that anything can restore the original color to gray hair, but there is room for hope. If the color loss is relatively recent, the non-oxidant environment provided by our serum may prevent the death of melanocytes and allow tyrosinase in those melanocytes to do its job again.
