I understand why my mother put a bag with camphor around my neck during the polio epidemic of 1953. That's all there was, bedides watching kids getting paralyzed or dying.

Now we have vaccines for polio, flu and many other infectious illnesses. True, we don't have a vaccine for the new coronavirus, yet. But this fact does not change the other fact: plant extracts will not cure you of a pneumonia caused by the new virus. What they can give you is a false sense of safety, which is dangerous in a time of real (not fake!) epidemic.

It hurts to know that right now, not even the USA CDC is a source of politics-free information, massaging numbers to benefit the boss. I look forward to the time when we will be able to recover the CDC as an independent scientific-medical agency, the kind we desperately need in difficult times.

Stay safe and wash your hands.

Your mother was sure to wash her hands, cover her mouth when she coughed, and turn her head when a sneeze surprised her.

"Poliovirus is usually spread from person to person through infected fecal matter entering the mouth. It may also be spread by food or water containing human feces and less commonly from infected saliva. ... The disease may be diagnosed by finding the virus in the feces or detecting antibodies against it in the blood."

Different virus, different transmission.

Yes, and it also has four strains. But unlike other viruses, it is particularly resistant. For example, live polioviruses have been detected in boiled milk three times. For now, the coronavirus has not been as resistant or as lethal ... for now.
