Hannah,
Is there a con of using glycerine? I don't seem to recall any of the products here with glycerin added. I was just gonna get glycerine to dissolve all the actives I bought so they could be more workable. If glycerine is so good at dissolving like the other member said. Why isn't it added to the formulas? Any side effects?

No, glycerine is perfectly fine.

Hello:

I have read glycerin is hygroscopic (attracts water) so using it undiluted on your skin can pull water out of your skin.

Any thoughts on the practicality of this?  I know glycerin dissolves actives and can be good in mixtures, but curious if anyone actually is using it undiulted on the skin.
Thank you for your expertise or experience!!!

(p.s. Wikipedia stated that glycerin on the skin drawing out moisture is not true, but I just wondered what your personal experience has been).

I would not use it straight on my skin, it would not be that convenient (it is VERY viscous). But can't see the problem of using it in a serum or cream.

Why on earth would you use it undiluted?!  It's great in small amounts - I use it myself.

I don't know whether or not the action of pulling water out of the skin is true.  I'm not a scientist and considering the problems Wikipedia has had recently, you might want to check another scientific source to verify their information.

I use Glycerin to dissolve Liquorice and Resveratrol, and it works beautifully.  I then add the Glycerin with the dissolved active(s) to my cream or serum according to the recommended percentages.

I don't know why anyone would want to use it undiluted, either.  I thought that was what he was asking.

Osmosis is the process by which water will diffuse across a semipermeable membrane following certain rules. Skin is not a semipermeable membrane but you could think of it as one in certain conditions. If you apply pure glycerol to the skin you could expect water to move in that direction from the skin cells but it would be a silly experiment to perform anyway.

Got it - my mistake!  That's the problem with on-line conversations... it's so easy to misunderstand what someone is saying.

Anyway, from personal experience, I would definitely recommend Glycerin --- in small amounts, that is!

I don't mind the mistakes that come from on-line conversations. The cons are well balanced by the fact that I can be in pajamas while I have them!
